Whether you're a novice or expert, the Fort Huachuca Arts & Crafts Center staff can help you uncover or enhance your artistic talents. The Center offers a variety of classes for users of all ages. Because class sizes are limited, instructors are able to work with students on a one-on-one basis. If you are unable to attend one of our scheduled classes, just give us a call at 533-5550/2015. Bring a 5x7 photo or piece of artwork and we’ll provide everything you need to double mat and frame your special memory or work of art.  You will learn to calculate and cut double mats, moulding, glass and foam board; join moulding, and apply backing and hangers.  Successful completion of this three-hour class will certify students to use the framing studio during do-it-yourself studio time. The certification will also allow students to use framing studios on Army installations around the world.  

DO-IT-YOURSELF FRAMING

Update your framing skills with a one-hour refresher course.  If it’s been awhile since you took the beginning framing class at Fort Huachuca or any installation worldwide, let us help you refresh your skills.  This course is held by appointment only.  Stop by or give us a call, 533-5550.

ENGRAVING AND AWARDS  
Our full-service engraving shop has the latest technology in computerized rotary engraving.  We offer engraving on a variety of metals, plastics and acrylics, and offer custom-made plaques, awards, trophies, medals, name tags, coin holders and much more.  We also engrave on specialty items such as wine glasses, bottles, pens and more.

GIFTS  
We offer a selection of ready-made decorative gift frames as well as coin and flag holders and engravable specialty items including Rod Mench military sculptures.

PICK-IT and PAINT-IT CERAMICS
Pick out a ready-to-paint cast ceramic piece and paint it any way you want.  We have something for everyone – from dinosaurs to coffee cups!  Our staff will provide instructions on the proper paint or glazes necessary to produce the best effects.  Pieces are priced to include instruction, paint, glazes and firing.  Costs vary depending on pieces selected.  All ages welcome! Registration Deadline

Registration deadline is always 1 week prior to the class start date. If you would like to register, but it is less than 1 week prior to the start of class please call 533-5550 or 533-2015 to confirm that seats are available.

Registrations are accepted in person at the Arts & Crafts Center or Framing Solutions, or by phone.  Class fees must be paid at least one week prior to the start of the class. If class fees are not paid one week in advance, your seat in the class will be offered to those on the waiting list. 

Class Cancellation

Classes do not have a minimum requirement and will only be cancelled if required by the instructor due to illness or emergency, or for equipment malfunction (if applicable), or unexpected building malfunction or closure.  Students will be contacted by phone if classes are cancelled.

Calligraphy is the art of “beautiful hand writing.” This class will introduce you to the Gothicized Italic “hand” using a broad tip calligraphy marker and dip pen. The elegance of the thicks and thins of the letters will fascinate you. You will be able to write invitations, address envelopes, make greeting cards and letter on material and works of art using this hand. Discover the calligrapher in you! Students will learn the basics of traditional wheel-thrown pottery:  centering, throwing, shaping, trimming, altering, firing, and glazing. In order to finish the project and to qualify to work independently during the Do-It-Yourself studio times, all sessions of the class are required. Class requirements: All supplies provided. Do-it-yourself studio times are Tuesday, noon—7 p.m., and Friday and Saturday, noon—5 p.m.  The DIY cost is $3 per hour plus the cost of clay and other supplies. Instructor Riki Tarquinio is available for guidance during studio times.

This hands-on class is perfect for those who love to take pictures but have little knowledge of how the digital SLR camera works. Students will learn what all the manual settings mean, and the vocabulary associated with Digital Photography such as exposure, aperture, shutter speed, ISO, JPEG, download, and much more. PHOTO WALKS


Photo walks are guided walking tours that focus on teaching beginning photographers to take better photos and will allow students to shoot photos using the technical knowledge learned in the Beginning Digital Photography class.  At various points along the routes, instructor Karyn Kuniyuki will instruct participants on how to take better photos in a variety of lighting, how to use a light diffuser and reflector, and how to take photos of people, architecture, vegetation and/or objects of interest.  Requirements:  Digital camera, memory card, extra batteries.

Bisbee  
Saturday, April 21, 5-8 p.m.

To stop in Bisbee is to stop in time. Nestled in the mile-high Mule Mountains of southern Arizona, Bisbee has maintained an Old World charm seldom found anywhere in the United States. The fine collection of well-preserved turn of the century Victorian structures are full of old west history and copper mining lore. Old miners' boarding houses have been refurbished into many charming small bed and breakfast establishments, of which no two are alike. Former saloons are now quaint shops, antique stores or art galleries. Discover Bisbee through your camera lens.  A portion of the walk will feature night photography instruction. GLASS SLUMPING & FUSING     Adults & Teens (16 & older)  

Introduction to Glass Fusing & Slumping  
Wednesday and Thursday, March 14 & 15, 6-8 p.m.
(4-hour class)
Fee:  $75 – includes all materials.  
Registration deadline is March 7.

Learn the fundamentals of glass fusing while creating two small square plates or bowls. You’ll be introduced to the basic concept of fusing, including materials, tools, glass cutting and arranging elements. You’ll use many colors of opaque and translucent glass as well as glass stringer, frit, and rods. Firing will take place outside class time, but kilns and kiln work will be discussed. This workshop is the perfect quick and easy way to discover what this art process is all about.  Instructor: Christen Scofield

BEGINNING LAPIDARY AND STERLING SILVER WIRE WRAPPED JEWELRY

What is lapidary? Lapidary is the art of cutting, polishing and engraving precious stones. Instructor Riki Tarquinio will teach you how to safely operate all machines in the lapidary studio as well as cut, shape and polish stones. All sessions of this class are required to finish the project and for students who wish to use the lapidary studio for do-it-yourself projects during open studio times. The Arts & Crafts Center will provide a certification to each student who completes this course. Class requirements: All supplies provided. To practice your freshly acquired skills, the lapidary studio is open to certified students on Tuesday, noon—7 p.m., and Friday and Saturday, noon to 5 p.m.  The studio fee is $3 per hour (maximum fee $10) plus the cost of materials

SILVERSMITHING     Adults & Teens (16 & older)

Beginning Silversmithing  
Wednesday and Thursday, March 14 & 15; Saturday, March 17, 9 a.m. - Noon
(7 hour class)

Beginning Silversmithing is a 7 hour class in which you'll learn basic silversmithing skills including: use of a jeweler's saw for cutting silver, filing, polishing, texturizing, shaping, and soldering with a torch. In this class, you will design Southwestern style sterling silver earrings or a pendant. ARTRAGEOUS ADVENTURES FOR KIDS

   

MOMMY & ME PRESCHOOL ART
Wednesday mornings, 10—11 a.m.

Preschoolers, ages 2-5, will experiment with a variety of different art techniques with a little help from mom… or dad. Activities include painting, clay, ceramics, drawing, sand drawing, beading and more. Pre-registration not required. Class requirements: All supplies provided. HOOKED ON ART
1st-5th Grades—Wednesday, 4-5:30 p.m.

Hooked on Art classes are sponsored by the CYSS EDGE! Program and designed for students of all abilities.  In our classes, students paint, draw, imagine, create and explore using a wide variety of art materials and techniques, all in an atmosphere of fun and success.

Transportation provided for SAS students on Wednesdays and for middle and high school students to and from the Youth Center on Thursdays. Students must be registered at CYSS Parent Central to attend classes, Bldg. 51301.

1st-5th graders who attend SAS, may sign-up for Hooked on Art at SAS.  1st-5th graders who do not attend SAS, may sign-up for Hooked on Art at CYSS Parent Central.  6th-12th graders may sign up at Youth Services or at CYSS Parent Central.

LITTLE HANDS
Beginning February 7.
1st – 5th grades – Tuesday, 3:45 – 5 p.m.  
Fee:  $50 per month per student. $35 per month for additional family members.  Or, $15 per week per student.

IMAGINATION CELEBRATION

6th – 12th grades – Thursday, 4 – 5:30 p.m.

ARTRAGEOUS ADVENTURES FOR KIDS Mom & Me.  Preschoolers, ages 2-5, can paint, sing, sculpt, collage and create…with a little help from mom and dad.  Every Wednesday morning, 10-11 a.m.  Cost:  $3 per class, per child.  Maximum of 2 children per adult.

ARTrageous Birthday Parties. 
A birthday party at the Family and MWR Arts & Crafts Center is fun, memorable & affordable.  Our birthday adventure is only $10 per child with a maximum of 15 children. The adventure includes teachers, one-hour art project, and a party room for 2.5 hours. Reserve and select an age appropriate art project at least two weeks in advance.  Times:  Saturday afternoons, Noon-2:30 or 3-5:30.

Group Crafts. 
Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, Brownies, church groups, school classes, and home school groups may book a craft session for their activity or to satisfy requirements for a badge.  Please schedule at least two weeks in advance.  Contact us for pricing and more information.
